    The challenge

Atlantic Technological University had developed an innovative digital career development platform with genuine potential. The concept was strong, the need was real, and the team behind it had the ambition to take it to a national scale. What was missing was the strategic foundation to get there.

Securing government funding for a technology platform in Irish higher education requires more than a good idea. It requires a rigorous business case that can withstand scrutiny from multiple stakeholders, a clear articulation of the platform's value beyond the institution that originated it, and a level of stakeholder alignment that signals the sector is behind the initiative. Without all three, a compelling concept risks staying exactly that.

ATU also needed to think clearly about how the platform would scale. Expanding capacity, building credibility beyond a single campus, and developing a model that could extend across the country were not problems that would solve themselves once funding was secured. They needed to be built into the strategy from the outset.

    The approach

Red Mountain worked with the ATU team across a twelve-month engagement to develop the strategic and commercial foundation the platform needed. This began with building the business case, not by overstating the opportunity, but by setting out the evidence for it clearly, honestly, and in a form that funding decision-makers would find credible.

Stakeholder mapping and engagement ran alongside this. Identifying whose support was essential to the platform's legitimacy, understanding what each stakeholder needed to see before committing, and managing those relationships through the funding process required as much strategic attention as the business case itself.

The engagement also addressed the growth strategy. How the platform would expand its capacity, what the national rollout model looked like, and how ATU would position itself as the anchor institution for a nationally distributed initiative were all questions that needed answers before funding conversations could reach a conclusion.

Throughout, Red Mountain brought both analytical rigour and a practical understanding of how funding decisions are made in the Irish higher education context. A strong idea presented without that contextual intelligence rarely gets funded.

    The outcome

The business case secured over one million euro in additional funding. The platform launched, expanded beyond its original campus, and is now extending its reach nationally. What began as a single university's concept is now a nationally funded platform with the resources and strategic foundation to keep growing.
